Self-Defense Training

 

Most people in today’s society generally equate the phrase “self-defense” with “martial arts.”  Although the two terms are related, they do not necessarily equate for several reasons.

 

There are a wide variety of martial arts disciplines.  Although all have origins as either battlefield or personal self-defense disciplines, the majority have evolved to serve other purposes, such as sports, stress relief, fitness, and wellness.  As a result, self-defense is often a secondary consideration to these other purposes.

 

Certainly the study of a martial art will impart skills that you can use to defend yourself, but skills are just a part of the self-defense equation.  Awareness, attitude, willingness to act, ability to identify threats and vulnerabilities, knowing how to counter-act these threats and vulnerabilities, understanding how the environment affects the situation...all of these are elements of the self-defense equation.
